About PALAHALLI village, my mother place

Palahalli is a beautiful village situated on Cannanoor road , three kilometres away from the world famous Sriramgapatna and one kilometer away from the famous bird sanctuary by name Ranganathittu. A small progressive village having primary, middle and High Schools, farmers, societies, a government veterinary clinic/hospital, few private clinics, two choultries, a bar and few small, grocery and book or stationary shops,

Palahalli village is well known for few local festivals, one being the SHAMBULINGESHWARA FAIR which falls on every last Monday of Shrvana Masa ( around December month every year). It is a non vegetarian festival ,unlike other local GRAMDEVTHA festivals like MAARI HABBAS where on animals are sacrificed . This Fair happens in night, say from 7 P.M. to 5 A.M. after the deity of the God, Shambulingeshwra , is washed in the near by cauvery river, brought to the Village, taken in grand procession in all main streets of the village and finally reaches the it\'s place, Shamulingeshwara Temple where thousands of people gather to celebrate the festival/ fair . The most interesting part of the festival is that the priest of the Temple is from Schedule Caste and he walks(cross) over with bare feet, red hot HONDA, a pond of Fire , specially prepared for the occasion by burning fire wood. Later few devotees ,both men and women , do the same thing , walk over the red hot honda.

Palahalli village is a cosmopolitan village which is known for religious harmony over the years, though dominated by Hindus. There are few Temples for Hindus, a Church for Christians and Mosque for Muslims but each community take part in all the festivals of the village. The common festivals are Maari Habbas( Village deity or GRAMADEVTHA festivals) where in sacrifice of animals like goats, sheep and chickens, are under taken to please the village goddesses and Temple Festivals which are organised by the temples concerned. There are Hindu festivals confined to Hindu temples like Shambulingeshawara, Eshawara( Shiva), Rama Temple and Thirumala temples which organise poojas and processions of respective God / deity, during the concerned festival days. Whereas the Christians celebrate Christian festivals in their Church, Muslims in their Mosque and they do arrange processions over the streets confined to the areas where in majority of their people reside . However all people take part in few village festivals particularly village deity festivals and Shambulingesheara Jatre or Fair , irrespective of their caste and religion. Friends and relatives are invited to share the festive food and happiness.
